LEAVE YOUNG BIRDS BE!!

Please, do not hamper a young bird's life by picking it up, and taking it home with you. It is calling its parents to help them in locating it.
After fledgling from the nest, the parent birds will keep feeding it, and look out for it, until it will be able to look after itself.
And the reason you cannot see a parent is because of your own proxomity to the young bird. And while you are ebating if or not you should take the bird home, you keep the parent from giving it well needed nutrition in the form of a meal!

Not a good start for this birder's birding year

Although 2009 looked promising on the first day in January with frequent visits of the little Goldcrest, I have not seen it since, and I fear the worst.

i've been sprinkling these little green Get Off My Garden crystals lately, after I'd spotted a grey feline around the garden. These crystals do seem to disappear on me though, and I've had to reapply them on a regular basis. I knew beforehand that you'd need to possibly reapply after showers, but even the calm weather seems to suck them up into the overhanging cloud which had shielded us from the Sun for so long it seems.

The next day, I wasn't around really; I was fast asleep trying to catch up on some shut-eye. Did not make me feel much better really, as I ended up with a very bad cold. And of course just as the weather is nice and calm, albeit still overcast.
The garden is very quiet, just the Coal Tits, Blue Tits, Great Tits, Pied Wagtail and Dunnock, together with a number of Jackdaws, Rooks and JJ.

Perhaps the birds are feeling the gloomy mood which is hanging around me, too?

Still, I wish you all a happy 2009.

  1. Sorry to hear that you have a bad cold. Gloomy skies for a long period of time will make lots of people depressed. Not to worry, you'll feel much better when the sun shines. That's a lovely little bird in the pictures.

  2. Happy New Year Yoke, I agree this weather is depressing, one can feel the soul lift when the sun comes out. I'm sure the goldcrest will be back, in this weather they have to continuously feed or they succumb to the cold, so possibly away from the garden in more insect nutricious areas.

Thought you may have taken up the birding challenge? Going to do another one at Easter if you're interested... more the merrier.

Keep the ostings coming, I love hearing about Ireland... maybe some more postings of where you are and what's around, looks a lovely spot.

  3. Crow, guess what? Sun's out, sky's blue; never thought I'd see these again this lifetime. still feel awful.

Andrew, I wanted to take it up, but having lots of physical trouble, these last few weeks, I just listed all the birds in my garden, but had no energy to put these 23 birds onto the internet.

    Hopefully next time at Easter.
